4 Indoor Activities for Seniors to Beat the Winter BluesJanuary 29, 2018
Don’t let the cold weather stop you from having a good time.
It can be hard to keep occupied during the winter when the weather is brutal and you want to stay tucked-in indoors. However, it’s so important to find fun activities during the wintertime because they contribute a great deal to your health and happiness.
Here are a few ideas for how you can keep busy:
1. Games and Sports
Another simple way to make your own fun indoors is picking up a game or sport. Gather some of your neighbors for a fast-paced game that keeps everyone entertained. You can use cards, board games, balls, or gaming systems.
You’re only limited by your creativity. Try classic games like Hearts, Dominoes, Monopoly, Bingo, Badminton, or Wii tennis. If these don’t appeal to you, make your own game. Setup some plastic bottles and grab a ball to make your own bowling alley, or find a new card game that you haven’t tried before. The possibilities are endless.
2. In-Residence Socials
If you’re not feeling particularly active, try gathering neighbors for an in-residence social event. You can set up a topic or theme for the social, like ‘speed-friending’, a Hawaiian Luau, or a film or football game viewing party. An even simpler plan is to just gather friends in a residence common area to chat. Whatever your plans, socialization is a wonderful way to beat boredom and bring neighbors closer together.
3. Arts and Crafts
Making something is a productive and fun way to spend your indoor time. You can make gifts for friends and family, make décor for your apartment, or create artwork for the community. Painting, drawing, and paper crafting are all simple and inexpensive ways to get started on a crafty project.
If you’re looking to stretch your art and craft skills a little further, consider taking a class in your community or teaching a class to your neighbors. Making a social event for arts and crafts increases the fun and introduces you to new people.
4. Community Involvement
One of the best ways you can spend your time is by giving it to the needs of your community. There are so many ways that you can use your time and skills to contribute to a community cause. Use your crafting talents to knit hats and scarves for the homeless. Apply your culinary finesse to baking meals for the hungry. Or give your time to local children through a mentorship program. Fill the needs in the community that are going unserved and you will feel a great deal of satisfaction in return.
